Award-winning travel/outdoor writer, illustrator and photographer

John Gillham’s first book Snowdonia to the Gower was published by Diadem Books in 1990. Gillham has since written and illustrated 22 other books, includingthe AA Leisure Guide to Wales, Coast to Coasting (David and Charles) 50 Walks: Derbyshire (AA Publications) and Ramblers’ Guide: Lake District (Collins). Along with Ronald Turnbull, he won the 2001 Outdoor Writers’ Guild Award for Excellence in the ‘outdoor book’ category.

    Gillham’s work has regularly been published in magazines such as TGO (The Great Outdoors), where he had his own series Way to Go’, Trail, Country Walking, and Dalesman.

    The author knows Wales from coast to coast, the Pennines, Northumberland, the Lake District, North Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Hampshire, Derbyshire and the Peak District. Abroad he has covered the United States (Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and Utah); Austria (the Tyrol); most of Switzerland, Italy (Sardinia, Val Gardena, Sorrento, Lake Como and Lake Garda) and France (Chamonix Corsica and the Giffre Valley).

    In March 2010 the first two of four Pictorial Guides to the Mountains of Snowdonia were brought out by Wainwright’s publisher Frances Lincoln. The 350-page books will offer by far the most comprehensive coverage of Snowdonia’s hills and mountains to date and are illustrated by the author’s 3D panoramas and colour photographs, 2014 saw John’s Cumbria Way published by Cicerone and the same publisher brought out his guide to Hillwalking in Shropshire on 15th September 2016.

Of the Pictorial Guides to the Mountains of Snowdonia

John Gillham and Ronald Turnbull won the Outdoor Writers Guild Award for Excellence for their book Coast to Coasting published by David & Charles in 2001. John again won the award in 2012 for Best Day Walks in Snowdonia.


He had previously been awarded a certificate of commendation by the Standing Conference of South Pennine Authorities for his book Bowland and the South Pennines.
